Writing Workshop

This workshop is presented by Devin Drover, Jennifer Graham and Matthew LeDrew. During lunch break and wrap-up we encourage participants to stick around and mingle. Some of the best ideas come from brain storming! As well, if any participants have works published feel free to bring them along. We will have an area set up for sales during breaks and between sessions in SN2000. Sessions will take place in the near by lecture style classrooms. These rooms are all near the "main" lecture hall in the Science Building on MUN Campus, St. John's Newfoundland. If you need help finding us, either send us an email or checkout the facebook event.

Sessions are first come, first serve! You can register right up to the time of the session, assuming there is still space. Please bring along pen and paper, as there will be writing exercises in many of these sessions.

Appeal to your Editors: Manuscript Preparation
With some editors getting hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pieces in the mailbox, it's important to know how to avoid being tossed in the reject pile before they even turn the page.

Writing Flash Fiction
More than just a small word count!

Promoting You
You are your own advocate. Even if you've been picked up by a publisher, you still have a role to play in your own success. Discover the tools out there for you to get your name known.

Horror Writing
More than just blood and guts, learn how to make even the most mundane scene a spine-tingling thrill that will bring fear and realism to any project, horror or not.

Writer's Toolkit
Every job has a certain set of skills needed to perform it properly. Make sure you're armed with the best, most finely-honed instruments necessary to carve out your story.

Screenplay Writing
Engen founder Matthew LeDrew runs through the do's and don'ts of screenplay writing! Great for beginners to intermediate writers of all genres!

Dealing with Rejection
One of the hardest things to deal with when putting your work out there are the waves of rejection that are bound to come back. Learn how to not only keep going after rejections, but reap some good from it.

Science Fiction and Science Fact
Because a work is fiction it does not give a writer licence to ignore the laws of the universe. It can often be more difficult to write science fiction because it requires knowing the rules you are trying to bend. Get acquainted with how to bend physics without breaking it.

Overcoming Writers Block
The bane of any writers’ existence, writers block can cause stress and sleepless nights. It's not something you just have to live with it! Gain tools and tricks for getting around any barriers the brain throws up.

Professionalism: More Than Meets the Eye
Starting out it can be difficult to be taken seriously, and far too many people shoot themselves in the foot before they even start. Discover the pitfalls that sink other writers, and rise to the top.
